The opening last autumn of Lincoln’s first dedicated students’ union building, the Engine Shed, has given a focus to student socialising that was previously lacking. It might seem strange when upwards of £100m has been spent on the modern, bright and attractive waterfront campus at Brayford Pool to highlight this nonacademic facility, but there was no question that the lack of a student hangout counted against Lincoln. That both applications and levels of student satisfaction are sharply up this year speaks volumes.
Next up is a £6m school of performing arts, due to open this autumn. It will be part of the Lincoln centre for the performing arts and allow students to work alongside visiting artists and professionals.
The university will hope it will be as successful as the East Midlands Media and Computing Technology Enterprise Centre, which opened a year ago.
Siren FM, the only university station in England to win a community licence from Ofcom, began broadcasting 365 days a year last month.
From acupuncture to web technology, Lincoln’s diverse range of single and joint honours degree programmes have an accent on real-world applications of knowledge.
Most students live close to Brayford Pool. Just over 1,000 are housed in the university’s student village, with the same number again in approved rooms on the fringes of the campus.

Open days September 29; October 27; November 24; January 19, 2008; March 15; May 10.

I was in Lincoln studying Law & Politics and I had a wonderful time, in a new University, meeting great people and receiving the support I needed.
The city is small enough that you can walk everywhere but big enough that it contains all the major stores and pub/restaurant chains.
Well worth it
