Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) has taken practical steps to prepare its students for the world of work when they emerge from its cocoon. Undergraduate entrants in 2008 will be the second year to have graduate skills development embedded in their degree courses. Proficiency in eight core areas is being developed, among them numerical reasoning, analysing and problem solving, personal planning and organisation and verbal communication.
Workplace learning, which takes the form of field trips, simulations and employer case studies, as well as more traditional experience, will also be a part of each degree. Students will be able to graduate with a Skills Statement denoting their competencies, as well as their degree certificate.
The three campuses – City, Mount Pleasant and IM Marsh are undergoing a facelift, with £100m of investment remodelling the entire university by 2012. Daily operations will not be interrupted, however.
With the backing of the BBC, Granada, Emap and Trinity Mirror, LJMU is developing the Liverpool Screen School, teaching practise-based television and film production, journalism, radio and news production and computer games, interactive media and animation. A building scheduled for completion in the next three years will bring the school under one roof but until then it will be housed at Liverpool Digital, a technology park on Edge Lane with filming, editing and postproduction facilities.
An Art and Design academy is set to open next year, coinciding with the year in which Liverpool becomes the European Capital of Culture.

Open days October 9 and 10.
