With a self-contained campus 15 minutes from central London, Queen Mary offers something different to the other colleges within the University of London federation. With 2,000 study bedrooms on site off Mile End Road, the college claims to have the largest fully-integrated campus in the capital.
The final phase of the Westfield student village has just been completed, adding 200 rooms, plus a restaurant and coffee shop. The new student residences look out over the Regent’s Park canal to Mile End Park beyond and are part of a £160m building programme that has enhanced Queen Mary’s offer to students in the past five years.
A chemistry building with a teaching laboratory for 120 students and an arts quarter, which acts as a focal point for humanities and social science students, are among the recent additions to the main Mile End campus. Just along Mile End Road, in Whitechapel, the college has a second campus at the Royal London hospital, where a Will Alsop-designed medical school opened in 2005. Work is continuing on a biosciences innovation centre at Whitechapel, due to open in 2008.
Queen Mary is multifaculty, unlike many other University of London institutions, partly as a result of being a fusion of four colleges, each with their own fortes – Queen Mary College, Westfield College and two medical colleges, St Bartholomew’s and the London.
Consequently, teaching and research excellence spans the arts and sciences, while Queen Mary is one of three universities nationally to pilot a scheme to increase the numbers of children taking maths at A-level. It will work with schools in east London to raise the profile of the subject.
The bursary support is aimed at students whose family income totals less than £33,769, with awards of between £819 and £1,024. Anyone achieving AAA at A-level will see their bursary topped up to £4,000 a year.
A central London location is never good news for sporty types, although a gym and fitness centre will open on the Mile End campus this month.
