The University of London’s campus in the country, Royal Holloway offers a rather different experience to other institutions under the UL umbrella. The college regards its approach as holistic: sports fields and facilities, indoor and out, are onsite, which encourages high participation rates; cultural and artistic opportunities are hard to rival with excellent theatres, high-profile student media outlets and a strong musical tradition; and student halls are sited around the picturesque parkland campus.
Royal Holloway is also a good bet academically. Its research profile puts it just outside our top 10 nationally; all its science departments gained the highest 5 or 5* ratings in the last research assessments in 2001, with more of the same expected in next year’s ratings. Indeed, Royal Holloway is one of just 10 institutions with all departments rated in one of the three top categories for research, denoting national or international excellence.
Study falls into traditional areas. The four new degrees planned for 2008 so far reflect this, covering maths and finance, criminology and sociology, computer science and finance, and geography and international relations. It’s a successful formula with the college’s graduate unemployment rate consistently among the very lowest.
Modelled on a chateau in the Loire, the Founder’s building will be for ever the chocolate-box image of Royal Holloway that makes the college instantly recognisable. Developments on campus, however, are keeping the university at the cutting edge. The refurbishment of the biological science laboratories has created state-of-the-art facilities; the school of management has been extended, and the Windsor building has provided a new 400-seat lecture theatre and seminar rooms.
Three further student residences, housing 450 students, open this month, helping to lift the college’s accommodation stock to just under 3,000. While a quarter of rooms are still to be internet enabled, there are wireless access points for up to 1,800 students scattered around campus.
Bursaries of £500 (paid to those on any level of state grant) can be doubled if entrants gain ABB or better at A-level, or for those getting AAA at A-level, there are 20 Founder’s Scholarships available worth £3,500 a year. Up to 60 Bedford Scholarships, worth £1,000, are open to students not getting a maintenance grant.

Open days September 29; March 15, 2008; June 18.
