Loughborough will learn later this year whether it will be the training base for Team Great Britain for the 2012 London Olympics. Its position on a shortlist of three indicates the depth and quality of the sports resources here. Loughborough has dominated university sport for the past 30 years, its men and women winning their inter-university championships for the 26th and 28th successive years respectively. Many compete on the national and international stage too.
Its academic track record runs sport a close second. It has been shortlisted for our University of the Year award three times (1999, 2003 and 2005) off the back of outstanding teaching assessments. Only Cambridge scored better over the closing years of the teaching reviews conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency.
The replacement review system, where students rate the quality of their teaching (and by implication the broader university experience) has been a similar triumph. Loughborough has ranked in the top five nationally in each of the first three surveys, this year with only Cambridge ahead of it among conventional multifaculty universities. As in all successful teaching universities, Loughborough has a strong research presence behind it, and its excellence was recognised when it joined the 1994 Group of universities in August 2006 (a grouping of mid-sized institutions with strong teaching and research profiles).
Graduates are in demand and there are extensive links both at research level and in terms of placing sandwich degree students during their work experience year. Students often get to meet the people who will employ them later. BAE Systems and the Ford Motor Company are Loughborough’s biggest strategic partners. The university also has close ties with Rolls-Royce, JCB Excavators, Lotus, Caterpillar, Costain, Waitrose, Bovis Lend Lease and Norwest Holst, among others.
The university, granted its charter in 1966 and originally a technology college, has one of the biggest single site campuses in the UK, at 433 acres. The Loughborough Sports Technology Institute opens at the end of the year and will work with industry and to improve the chances of athletes at the 2012 Olympics.
The campus also has a shout at being Britain’s greenest; the completion of a combined heat and power plant earlier this year means the university can provide its own electricity and use the heat generated.
Students love Loughborough. The contentment evidenced by the first three national student surveys is fostered by a lively programme of events on campus. The arts flourish and socially (despite the prevalence of sporty types) life extends to more than drinking competitions and athletic PBs (personal bests). The students’ union last year broke its own national record for the amount of money raised for charity during rag week (£625,000).
