An institution dwarfed in size only by its near-neighbour, MMU has a formidable range of courses that span the traditional (chemistry, maths, law and biology) and the vocational (photography, embroidery, food management and dance). If you want to study it, Manchester Met probably offers it. The range of degrees to be introduced this September and next is wider than the entire portfolios of some universities. Among them are librarianship, financial services, foundation degrees in business, and routes for combined honours students that include abuse studies, coaching studies and sport development.
About two-thirds of students get university bursary support, ranging from £100 to £1,000 depending on family income. There are no scholarships, except for overseas students, the university choosing to assist the many not the few.
Students are spread across seven campuses. The two Cheshire sites are home mainly to teacher trainees, plus those following sports, contemporary arts and some business degrees. The university plans to consolidate its activities on just three campuses in Manchester and Crewe by 2013.
MMU is one of the largest providers of art and design courses in the UK, incorporating the original Manchester School of Art and the school of theatre that counts Julie Walters, David Threlfall and Steve Coogan among its alumni. The business school is also among the largest in Britain, with 4,000 undergraduates. It earned the university one of its 15 excellent ratings for teaching quality, which gives it one of the best records among the modern universities.

Open days October 6 (Cheshire); October 10 and 13 (Manchester).
