Based at seven campuses throughout central and southwest Edinburgh, Napier is well integrated into Scotland’s capital city. With sights set on establishing itself as Scotland’s best modern university, it focuses on vocational degrees designed to prepare students for professional life.
Flexibility of study and diversity of intake are key; nearly a fifth of students study part-time, almost half are older than 21 and more than a quarter arrived from higher national certificate and diploma courses instead of Highers or A-levels. More than a third are also recruited from abroad.
Work-based learning plays a significant part in a degree here; many courses offer work placements and a number are accredited by professional organisations. Cementing a readiness for working life is the “confident futures” project, an initiative designed to boost confidence. Via workshops, lectures and online learning, students are educated in soft skills to enhance employability. It clearly pays off, as 84% end up in graduate-level jobs, one of the highest rates in the UK. This success contributes to Napier’s sharp rise in our league table this year.
Providing top-notch facilities is central to Napier’s long-term objectives and there are big plans afoot. The regeneration process that started in 2004 with the redevelopment of Craiglockhart campus, home to the business school, continues with the £8.5m revamp of Merchiston, scheduled for 2009. Sighthill is being razed and restarted from scratch. Demolition is set to begin next year, with the £55m new campus expected to open in 2010, bringing nursing, life sciences, social sciences and sports disciplines together on one site.
Home to about 100,000 students, Edinburgh is a great city in which to spend student years. And with Napier halls of residence relatively affordable at £70-£75 per week, there should be change left over to make the most of all the city has to offer.
