The qualities that made Newcastle University our University of the Year in 2000 remain in abundance today. High-quality teaching and cutting-edge research are to be found across most disciplines, with medical sciences a particular forte, where Newcastle has an unparalleled reputation.
It is a hit with recruits from both the state and independent sector, with the latter making up almost one-third of the student population, one of the highest levels in the UK. The dropout rate is below funding council expectations and about half the students seek employment in the northeast on graduation, a reflection of the intoxicating (in every sense of the word) atmosphere that pervades city and university. The social, cultural and sporting life are hard to beat.
Entry standards are high; Newcastle is in the elite group of universities able to attract students who gain 400 Ucas points at A- and AS-level. Scholarships worth £500 or £1,000 awarded for one year or for the duration of courses are offered to the most able and more than 200 first degrees are offered.
Newcastle has enjoyed significant exposure for its stem cell research work in seeking a cure for diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Two of its professors, among the world leaders in the field, have been advising Sir Richard Branson on plans to establish a blood bank for stem cells harvested at birth.
Graduate unemployment rates are generally low, while starting salaries at £20,300 are higher than average.
Sport plays a bigger part in daily life in the northeast than in most other parts of the country. University facilities are outstanding. Rowing takes place on the Tyne; Newcastle won the annual boat race against Durham this year. And an 18-hole golf course, formerly owned by the university, still offers concessions to those keen to improve their swing on the fairway rather than the city’s dance floors.

Open days October 6.

Newcastle and Durham were once one-and-the-same university until they separated in the 1960s. I was recently a student at both - Durham for my BSc and Newcastle for my MSc. I thought Newcastle was the far superior of the two.
