The Arkwright building, together with the university’s other city landmark, the art deco Newton building, are the subject of a £70m makeover to produce a modern university centre in time for the start of the 2009-10 academic year. There has been huge investment in the infrastructure. The city centre Bonington building, which houses the school of art and design, has been refurbished, while this month the first veterinary nursing students will be welcomed at the Brackenhurst site, 14 miles from Nottingham.
The accent is on vocational education and there is also a strong portfolio of foundation degrees. Just two universities nationwide have a greater proportion of students on year-long sandwich course job placements than NTU, so seriously does it take its mission to turn out work-ready students.
Applications to NTU have bounced back this year (up 10%) following the sharp dip in 2006, which was also felt at the University of Nottingham. A spate of bad publicity concerning levels of gun crime in the city was thought to be to blame. However, the intrinsic quality of both institutions has sparked a recovery.
NTU students are in demand. Levels of unemployment are among the lowest in the UK and most (76%) go into graduate-level jobs, placing the university in the top 30 nationally.

Open days October 20.
