When Sir Colin Campbell, Nottingham’s vice-chancellor, steps down next September he will leave behind a much-changed institution from the one he took over in 1988. Still one of the most popular universities in the UK (despite a fall in applications of 10,000 from its peak in 2003), Nottingham demands some of the highest grades from entrants. In return, it churns out graduates who are the most sought after, alongside those from Manchester and Cambridge, according to last year’s High Fliers survey in The Times. The same two universities are the only ones to have had more subjects (36) rated excellent for the quality of their teaching than Nottingham’s outstanding score of 33.
Despite the competition for places, Nottingham recruits from a diverse spectrum and this year has seen a 22% rise in the number of students from families in the lowest (under £22,560) income bracket.
Several new degrees combining communication studies or contemporary Chinese studies with other subjects are offered for the first time this month. Indeed, the school of contemporary Chinese studies is the only one in the UK. Nottingham is already the first western university to set up a campus in China. The centre at Ningbo, together with another near Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, offers parallel courses (taught in English) to those available in the UK.
Nottingham has also been broadening its appeal at home. The school of veterinary medicine and science was opened last April, halls of residence on the Sutton Bonington campus have been completed, and a £200m expansion is under way on the Jubilee campus to help house an expected 30% rise in undergraduate numbers over the next five years.
