Plymouth has redefined its role as a regional university. Where it was once a multi-campus institution, it is now to focus all teaching and research on a single site in Plymouth, fulfilling its regional remit through partnerships with other universities and offering a huge range of (mostly) foundation degrees and diplomas through 16 colleges across the southwest.
The decision has gone hand in hand with huge investment. First to open is the £35m Joshua Reynolds building for the arts and community. The landmark complex includes a cinema, cafe, gallery and exhibition space, making it the focal point for the city’s cultural quarter.
The decision to move the faculty of education from the pretty seaside town of Exmouth to the mothership has been sugared by a £40m headquarters building which will be ready for students next September. At the same time, a £10.5m building for the faculty of health and social work will also be open for business. The faculty is key to Plymouth’s activities, as the university trains all the region’s nurses and midwives.
Teaching is of high quality. It is the only university in the UK to gain nine national teaching fellowships. Plymouth is one of just two modern universities to have a medical school, run with the University of Exeter. From this month, it becomes the only one to have both a medical and a dental school; the Peninsula dental school, also a partnership with Exeter, will train 62 dentists a year.
Plymouth has geography in its favour too. This is the only university in the country where you can learn to surf and dive as part of your academic life. Plymouth’s BSc in surf science and technology is a serious course serving a key sector of the southwest economy.

Open days October 20; June 18, 2008.
