It has been a landmark year for Queen Margaret, which was granted full university status in January, making it one of two new universities in this year’s guide. It is also one of the smallest. QMU has been the highest ranked university college in our guide for the past two years, scoring particularly well for its low graduate unemployment rate and the calibre of its recruits. A rise in its projected dropout rate accounts for the fall in its league table position this year.
The new university is also getting the newest campus; a move to the first purpose-built site to be constructed in Scotland in 30 years is under way. Located on the eastern edge of Edinburgh in the coastal town of Musselburgh it features a 24/7 learning resources centre, combining library and IT services, purpose-built laboratories and clinics for students of the allied health professions and a studio theatre. Students’ union and sports facilities will all be incorporated and there will be 800 en-suite rooms, enough to house about a quarter of the full-time undergraduate population and all first-years.
QMU has focused on providing high quality across a small range of subjects. The accent is on applied knowledge, with vocational courses dominant. Drama and theatre, media, psychology and business are all to the fore and it has established a significant international reputation in the field of speech and language science, with audiology a strength. The range of allied health subjects offered is huge.
The high employment rate of its graduates is due in no small part to ties with business and industry, which are particularly strong in the media and the health sciences.
