Portsmouth is one of the most improved modern universities, jumping nine places in this year’s league table and now the fifth best modern university overall. This has been achieved through a huge increase in student satisfaction from a below-par 69.5% in 2006 to a top 20 rated 77.1% this year. There have also been healthy improvements in scores for entrance qualifications and graduate employability.
The picture of student contentment with teaching and facilities is not hard to explain. Teacher training is the latest subject to earn top ratings for teaching quality. PD James, crime writer and recipient of an honorary Portsmouth degree for services to literature, opened its new £11m library this year. Wireless technology throughout means students can access the internet from laptops. Green sensibilities have been adhered to; systems such as rainwater harvesting are in place to ensure the building does not impact on the environment.
The university welcomed its first budding hacks in September and is extending its range of journalism courses to include BAs in journalism and history; international relations with journalism; and international journalism and languages. Facilities include a newsroom complete with prepress quality scanners, design software and wall-mounted televisions.
Students on health-related courses also have up-to-date resources at the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, which has its own operating theatre and hospital ward.

Open days September 26; October 13 and 24; November 14.

I studied at the University of Portsmouth from 04-07. The uni has a lot of opportunities for students to develop themselves and reach their full potential. It's up to the students however to take those opportunities. The uni definitely makes sure that students leave with a solid foundation.
