Sheffield is one of the powerhouses of British higher education. Strength in teaching and research is complemented by outstanding facilities and links to business and industry. It was The Sunday Times University of the Year in 2001 and has consistently appeared as one of our top 20 institutions. Just three nationally have more than Sheffield’s 30 top-rated subjects for teaching excellence and just five can better the 35 subject areas deemed to have conducted world-class research in the most recent ratings.
While commanding high entry qualifications – the average attainment equating to AAB at A-level with a further A-grade at AS-level in a different subject – it is also inclusive. Sheffield exceeds its benchmark for recruitment from state schools and 37% of the intake are expected to gain a bursary, despite a low residual income cut-off of just under £34,000. Scholarships, which place a bounty on A-grades, are open also to those who qualify for such support and, in certain priority subjects, to all students. Priority subjects include engineering, chemistry, physics, maths, and computing. The Learning Commons, a £23m library, study and IT centre to complement the main library, opened this year.
Sheffield’s students are in demand, with nearly three-quarters going into graduate-level jobs. The introduction of the Sheffield Graduate Award, which recognises experience and real-life skills gained beyond a degree, can only make them more attractive to employers. The award can cover enterprise, work experience, community volunteering and even international relations.
Sheffield is the fourth largest city in the UK and has a student population pushing 50,000, including Sheffield Hallam. It has the facilities of a big city without the disadvantages. Crime rates are low, as are rents. Sports facilities are excellent and the Peak District is on the western edge of the city.
