The university is reducing its campuses from three to two. All staff and students will move from Psalter Lane to the city centre by September 2008 mostly into accommodation currently under construction that will provide teaching space for 1,600 students and a gallery for the artists within the broad grouping of subjects within the faculty of arts, computing, engineering and sciences.
The £15m Robert Winston building for health, social care and bioscience students has been described by the nursing and midwifery council as “a beacon for the future of health and social care education”. Facilities include a birthing simulator.
Many students follow vocationally-oriented sandwich courses with a work placement year. Links with business and industry are extensive.
The university is a pioneer of work-based learning; the first graduates of work-based degrees in occupational therapy and physiotherapy left the university this summer.
More than 40 programmes can be taken online, ranging from short courses to masters qualifications.
Sheffield Hallam recruits heavily from the immediate Yorkshire region. More than half of students are expected to get a bursary of £700, with an additional £300 for those recruited from a partner school or college. One-year scholarships of £1,000 are paid to the 150 students with the highest Ucas tariff points scores across certain subjects.
Applications are up 10% this year to an institution that is already one of the biggest in the sector. More people seeking places should help cut the numbers admitted through clearing, running at close to one in five last year. The university recently finished top of the Access Elite league table for combining teaching and research excellence with widening participation and a dropout rate well below the level expected.
