No sooner has one huge investment programme been completed than the university is embarking upon another. Just short of £240m will be spent by 2010 on four key projects that will provide cutting-edge facilities for life science research, a new home for the school of biological sciences, and the redevelopment of the Boldrewood campus into a facility where Southampton comes face to face with business and the professions.
Central to this plan is a proposal for a maritime centre of excellence – the existing National Oceanography Centre on the waterfront campus is already the leading facility of its kind in Europe. Three planned degrees from this term will cover ocean chemistry, ocean physics and oceanography, with a year’s study in North America.
Just seven universities in the UK have a stronger profile for research than Southampton. A healthy rise in applications means there are now about seven applicants per place, with about 400 Ucas points the standard level of attainment required.
Consistently among the top 20 institutions in The Sunday Times table, Southampton has done well in the first three national student surveys. Social, sporting and service facilities are now all at a level commensurate with a university of its standing since 2004.
Southampton claims to be second only to Cambridge in its success at converting research into successful business. Of 12 companies spun out of university research since 2000, three are now listed on AIM, the alternative investment market.
It also works hard to diversify its intake. The BM6 programme allows entry to medical degrees for students with lower qualifications (Bs and Cs at A-level) in return for completing a foundation year.
About a third of students benefit from a bursary scheme worth £1,000 a year for those from families with a residual income of £21,500 or less, falling to £500 with a £30,000 per year ceiling on income.
