With halls of residence rates from just £55 a week, your student pound goes a lot further at Staffordshire. Straightforward bursary support from the university also helps stretch study funds: those on the full maintenance grant get £1,300 per year, dropping by £300 if the household income is up to £21,500 and down to £500 for up to £38,330. Students on HND (higher national diploma) and foundation courses also qualify for help if they receive means-tested grants.
Staffordshire has a strong reputation for widening access to higher education. It draws most (64%) of its students from the local area and runs a priority application scheme for people studying or living in Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire.
The university’s fast-track two-year degree courses received praise this year from higher education minister Bill Rammell, who said: “Staffordshire University is a really good example of a university that is working creatively to meet the needs of future and potential students”, and that “fast-track degrees are certainly no easy option”.
Rare, a Twycross-based games design company whose titles include Perfect Dark and Kameo, is to base its new motion capture studio on campus, giving games design students the opportunity to work with top industry teams. The spotlight has also been on forensic science. The university hosted the first regional conference in the field last year and is developing courses for the police, airport fire services and other security agencies.
Work will start later this year on the development of a £200m “university quarter”, a project of education-led regeneration for the region.

Open days October 10; November 17.

Sorry Charlie, but most of the 'better' universities have achedemics and professionals teaching the students as well. Its just that they're 'better'
Phil Bailey, Shrewsbury, UK
I'm a law student at Staffs and I love it here. I deliberately chose it over universities the Times has ranked it lower than because the atmosphere is a lot better. We also tend to be taught by academics and legal professionals rather than post-grads as is common at some 'better' unis.
