Enterprise lies at the heart of Strathclyde’s mission. Perhaps it is something to do with its location in a dynamic city. Or the vocational diet of degrees. Or the fact that billionaire Sir Tom Hunter was educated here and continues to be involved through the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship@ Strathclyde, which offers elective courses to all students, whatever their degree subject.
The classes are highly participative and take a practical approach to teaching skills that will mark out graduates as the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. With more than 40 spin-out companies to its name, Strathclyde is among the top 10 entrepreneurial universities in the UK. It is in the top five for intellectual property income.
There are two university sites: the John Anderson campus in central Glasgow and the former Jordanhill College of Education five miles out. This latter facility will be incorporated on the main campus by 2010 in a £50m Faculty of Education building.
Anderson’s founding credo to create a place of “useful learning” is alive today. The business school is one of the 1% worldwide to hold an international triumvirate of business-school accreditations; the engineering faculty is the largest in Scotland and runs distinctive courses such as naval architecture and marine engineering. A £35m drug research and development centre is to be developed, to focus on key issues such as discovering new drugs to combat MRSA and improving understanding of the human immune system.
The proof of the pudding is in the graduate unemployment rate, which at just over 4% this year continues to be one of the lowest in the UK. Former students also earn £1,000 a year more than the average in their first job (£19,400) and four in five of them are in graduate-level jobs.
More than that, the Glasgow nightlife is sensational, while the union building is 10 floors of student heaven, with six bars and 28 pool tables.
