Teesside rode up to its highest ever ranking in our league table last year and continues to perform well. Its formula for success has been to identify gaps in the higher education market and provide courses to meet the needs of employers (with whom the university works closely). New degrees in multimedia journalism professional practice and medico-legal death investigation give a flavour of the level of specialism that it is possible to achieve with a Teesside degree. The world of work is never far away from any course, although the graduate unemployment rate is stubbornly high running above 10%.
Teesside has made subjects such as computer games and digital media its own. Two developments costing £21m should cement its position in this academic vanguard. The Phoenix Building will house the university’s institute of digital innovation, while the Athena Building will be home to the centre for creative technology. Both are core to Middlesbrough’s DigitalCity initiative, which aims to create 300 new jobs across 130 companies in the town by 2010. The university is also a leader in forensic investigation. It has a 30-room crime house and a vehicle forensic examination centre, which allows students to hone their fingerprinting, photographic and forensic skills in a controlled space.
Middlesbrough is one of the cheapest places to study in the UK. University accommodation starts at just £40 a week and Teesside has worked hard to provide additional financial support. All students gaining BBB at A-level or equivalent qualify for a £1,000 a year scholarship. More than 200 achieved this benchmark last year and every student gets a one-off £500 Welcome Grant, regardless of family income. Those from families with income between £17,500 and £25,000 qualify for a £500 bursary paid annually, with the maximum £1,300 paid to those from families on less than £17,500. These arrangements are under review for 2008.
That 40% of freshers last year earned this maximum grant is an indication of Teesside’s success at widening participation. Almost half the intake comes from working-class families and virtually everyone is state school educated.
A partnership with Darlington College is delivering Teesside courses locally and there are plans to launch a similar scheme in Hartlepool.

Open days October 17; June 18, 2008.
