With more than 27,000 full- and part-time students, Ulster is the biggest university in Ireland. It has four campuses spread across Northern Ireland, from Magee, near Londonderry in the northwest, and Coleraine in the northeast, to Belfast and nearby Jordanstown.
There is an emphasis on preparing students for the workplace and most courses include an industrial or professional placement. This contributes to the low graduate unemployment rate, this year close to 5%. The latest options include several joint honours degrees combining journalism, advertising, drama, international politics, Irish history, social policy, sociology and economics with a range of other subjects.
Just under half of undergraduates will benefit from Ulster’s bursary arrangements. Most will get £305 this year if their family’s income lies between £20,501 and £38,804. This rises to £1,020 if it is below £17,910. There are also scholarships awarded on academic merit or to those recruited from schools with a poor track record of sending children into higher education.
The university has recently opened a £20m intelligent systems research centre at the Magee campus. It is the biggest single research investment in the 150-year history of the campus.
University-owned accommodation is among the cheapest in the UK, starting at just £42 a week. There is enough to mop up virtually all first-years who want it, although many who study here live at home.

Graduated last summer from the Coleraine campus. It was great experience, teachers are so helpful and the nitelife is fantastic. Live in Portstewart though, Portrush a bit of a dive.
