The university has restructured into five schools: art and design, education, health sciences, management and sport, each with its own strategy to develop learning, teaching, research and enterprise with the help of new specialist staff. The move is intended to give students the best possible experience as well as raise the schools’ research profiles.

Cardiff’s rise to fame as a hip, desirable metropolis over the past decade or so has made studying here increasingly popular. Yet living costs remain relatively low for a capital city. The combination makes it an excellent place in which to study.

All four campuses are to be spruced up in a £46m project to improve estates and facilities in the next five years. There will be two extra lecture theatres and new laboratories. The students’ union is being given a facelift and sports facilities are also being upgraded.

Sporty students have particular reason to choose Uwic. The National Indoor Athletics Centre was completed in 2000 at the Cyncoed site, while other facilities include the Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled, the Lawn Tennis Association indoor and outdoor tennis centre, national league pitches for rugby and football, a dance studio, gymnastics centre and floodlit netball courts.

Sports scholarships are worth up to £1,000 a year and are awarded to “elite” athletes with proven ability, or those with a top 10 ranking or who have represented their country.

With Welsh universities now charging the same top-up tuition fees as their English peers, Uwic has made means-tested bursary provision to help students who qualify for it.
