Modular degrees, January start dates, a multitude of combined honours options and huge numbers of part-time students: these are all attributes of many of our leading modern universities. Perhaps more surprisingly, they are also features of Lampeter, the oldest university in Wales, whose oft-quoted attributes are traditionally to do with its size (very small) and location (very remote).
Lampeter has a strong liberal arts tradition. Some courses are very of the moment, such as the new single honours degree in Chinese studies that admits its first intake this month, or Islamic studies. Others are traditional, such as archeology, philosophy and divinity. The remainder span all points in between, covering media studies, film studies, English with creative writing, classics, Arabic and voluntary sector studies.
Part-timers (who outnumber full-time undergraduates by six to one) can study at their own pace, building up their modules to complete a degree in anything from six to 10 years.
The university is the dominant feature in a small town of 4,000 inhabitants. The place is not exactly jumping and this year’s bottom 20 showing in the national student (satisfaction) survey suggests as much, although last year’s survey put the university in the top 20. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.
What’s not in dispute is that this is one of the more affordable places to study, whether living in the ample supply of cheap accommodation or out in the town or in one of the villages. And few universities have such outstanding scenery on the doorstep.
