Founded in 1841 as the Mechanics Institute, Newport’s evolution has seen it given degree awarding powers in 1995, become a university college a year later and join the University of Wales in 2003. Based at two campuses, one just outside Newport city centre and one in the pretty village of Caerleon, it is increasingly popular among undergraduates and has seen recent applications increase more than four times the national average.
Students are attracted by vocational courses and a progressive attitude, while the city itself offers a burgeoning music scene as well as relatively low living costs.
Newport is the host of an elite new school of golf, in conjunction with the nearby Celtic Manor resort, venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. It offers just three places each year, with the chosen few gaining access to a dedicated golf programme director, a personal academic tutor and the world-class facilities at Celtic Manor.
Financial support is extensive and includes a £1,845 grant for Wales-domiciled students to offset the raised costs of tuition. National bursaries of £305 are available to all full-time students choosing a university in Wales, regardless of where they come from in the UK, so long as they qualify for the maximum assembly learning grant or maintenance grant (given where household incomes are no more than £17,920 per year, the same threshold as in England). Newport has its own bursary scheme, too, worth from £300 to £1,000 per year with three valued at £2,000.

Open days October 13; January 26, 2008; May 31.
