Approval was given in May for the Heslington East campus development which will transform York from one of Britain’s smaller and highly successful universities into a much bigger one ready to scale even greater academic heights. The £500m expansion will add some departments long lacking in an institution of this calibre, most notably law.
Although new-build accommodation for this department will not be ready until 2009, York is admitting postgraduates to study law this month, with the first undergraduate intake next September.
The new department of theatre, film and television will admit students to its inaugural programme in writing, directing and performance. Teaching will focus on the scientific/technical skills and the creative/cultural aspects of the three disciplines.
Heslington East will add further colleges and expand sports facilities, with a new 25m pool and a martial arts/dance studio, and the campus will naturally feature York’s trademark lake, home to the ubiquitous university ducks.
It is arguably the most significant university development in the pipeline in the UK, but the existing university has plenty to commend it. Among universities, only Cambridge and Loughborough have a better recent record than York for teaching quality, while our analysis of research ratings place the university sixth in the UK for research quality with computer science, English and psychology the jewels in the crown, all earning the highest 5* assessments.
A medical school, opened in collaboration with the University of Hull, was added in 2003. It is heavily oversubscribed with about 1,000 applicants chasing 130 places.
York as a whole is oversubscribed with about eight applications per place and with the average A/AS-level attainment now pushing 440 points, it is clear many entrants are arriving with straight As.
Existing bursary arrangements benefit the one-third of students who also get a state maintenance grant. York tops this up by between £614 and £1,434 each year.
Arts, the media and music are popular extracurricular pastimes at York. Students also benefit from being in one of the most historic cities in Britain. On the downside, it can get overrun in summer with tourists; on the upside the city is awash with pubs and has plenty of space in winter.
