Exeter broke into the top 20 of our league table for the first time last year and finished a close second in our University of the Year contest to boot. Both achievements reflect the vitality and optimism that pervade this institution. Based on a scenic campus on a hillside above the cathedral city of Exeter with the seaside and Dartmoor a stone’s throw away, Exeter is a popular choice.
Applications are up this year by almost a quarter, fuelled by the expansion of the innovative Cornwall campus where courses in history, geography, law, politics and Cornish studies commence this month. With the average Ucas points score gained now pushing 400, Exeter is able to choose from the brightest students.
They are well rewarded, too, with £1m having been sunk into a scholarship scheme. Ten get £5,000 a year as vice-chancellor’s excellence scholarships and another 15 scholarships worth up to £2,000 a year are offered by the Camborne School of Mines on the Cornwall campus to geology, mining engineering or renewable energy students. There are scholarships for science, engineering, sport and music and bursaries for the quarter of those on state grants.
More than 100 academic appointments have been made this year – including 25 professors in areas as diverse as Arab and Islamic studies, psychology, bioscience, engineering, geography and modern languages – as Exeter seeks to build on its strong academic profile. A £28m dental school – the first in Britain in 40 years – admits students this month, the latest development at the Peninsula medical school which opened in 2002.
The student media scene is among Britain’s most developed; Xpression FM is one of just three student radio stations nationally to have a year-round FM licence.
With such high levels of student engagement, it is no surprise that Exeter has done so well in the first three national student surveys. This year it ranks eighth for student satisfaction (fifth among multifaculty institutions), helping Exeter retain its place in our elite top 20 overall.

Open days October 6 (Cornwall).
