The university location puts students physically at the heart of the capital city that many of them already call “home”. Glasgow Caledonian recruits strongly from the immediate area and the Strathclyde region, so the fact that it has one of the smallest stocks of student rooms (just 660) is not the problem it might otherwise be.
Higher entry grades are achieved by more of the intake than in many of the university’s rivals. Glasgow Caledonian excels in delivering vocational higher education on a grand scale – its business school is the biggest in Scotland and the fourth biggest in the UK. It offers the only honours degree in Britain in risk management, with companies cherry-picking graduates. There is also the only professionally accredited undergraduate journalism degree in Scotland. More building and surveying graduates come from here than at any other UK institution, while the school of health and social care and school of life sciences graduates keep the NHS well stocked.
The death of former chancellor Magnus Magnusson has been marked by a scholarship in his name. Worth up to £5,000, it will be awarded to second-year students upwards engaged in areas of key interest to the late writer and broadcaster; the media, journalism, history, language, literature and the natural environment.
