St Andrews has equalled its highest ever ranking this year, with a string of improvements in performance over 2006. The academic achievement of freshers is at an all-time high, graduate unemployment is down, the number of firsts and 2:1s awarded is up and the dropout rate is predicted to be just 5%, below the level expected by the funding council.
The decision to be among the first Scottish institutions to take part in the national student survey is being vindicated by an outstanding performance this year and last. Just five multifaculty universities rank higher for satisfaction in 2007.
The winner of our Scottish University of the Year title last year, St Andrews is runner-up for our UK award this year, five years after it won the title outright.
The university, founded in 1413, has continued to reap a dividend from Prince William’s attendance from 2001-05. Today, it can pick from the very brightest with the average A-level attainment touching AAB or AAABB if Highers are the principal passport to a place. There are more than eight applications per place. Overseas students make up a third of the intake.
St Andrews is hugely popular with independent schools. The privately educated make up about 40% of the home intake and only Oxford and Cambridge miss targets for recruitment from state schools by a wider margin. This is despite a range of widening participation initiatives.
Faculties include renowned centres for the study of terrorism and political violence, peace and conflict studies, and institutes for Syrian and Iranian studies. Degrees are highly flexible in the first two years and the quality of teaching and research is outstanding.
New student residences, the David Russell apartments, embrace the latest in green thinking. An £8m arts building was completed last year and work will begin next year on a £25m upgrade of the main university library.
The city and the university merge into one. Students make up about half its population during term time and the buildings are part of the fabric of the town. It doesn’t have a nightclub, but people don’t suffer from any shortage of entertainment.
If you want an academically rewarding time in a university set in a beautiful coastal location with easy access to some of the finest scenery in the world, then St Andrews could be just right for you.
