Salford, the self-styled university of limitless possibilities, has given equal priority to enterprise alongside teaching and research for the past decade, such is its commitment to making the learning here relevant to the outside world.
This confidence is attested to by the opening of a £10m law school this month and the launch last May of Salford Business School. A £22m building for health and social care opened last year. In all, £150m is being invested in new facilities.
Salford was one of the first institutions to develop knowledge transfer partnerships, a government-funded scheme to link graduate placements, senior academics and innovative companies.
With the campus a little more than a mile from the city centre, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester are near-neighbours. The three institutions have about 60,000 full-time undergraduates between them, and the city is their playground.
The message about the university and the city is getting through, with applications up this year and barely 2% of places filled through clearing in 2006. However, the projected dropout rate of about one in four is well above the level the funding council expected, even allowing for Salford’s socially diverse intake. More students are admitted to Salford through access courses than to any other university, the proportion rising from 4% of the home intake in 1998 to 10% now.
