Low-participation areas 14.7% A commitment to the communities of Essex and Cambridgeshire characterises Anglia Ruskin. It may not have the strongest of records in our league table, having finished last two years ago, but it offers access to higher education to a broader base than most other institutions with many students (43%) not relying on A-levels as their main passport for admission. More than a third of the intake are aged over 21 when they begin their studies.
With roots as the Cambridge College of Art — founded by art critic and social thinker John Ruskin in 1858 — one of Anglia Ruskin’s principal campuses sits cheek by jowl with a rather more illustrious neighbour in the heart of Cambridge. The other main site is in Chelmsford, county town of Essex and 30 minutes by train from London. With further outposts in King’s Lynn and Peterborough, plus partner colleges in northeast London, Norfolk, Suffolk and Hertfordshire, the university has a wide regional reach.
Facilities have benefited from an £85m investment in new study, social and sports resources, and there are more plans ahead. The Cambridge campus is undergoing a massive redevelopment for 2011.
Sports facilities at Chelmsford include a hall, fitness suite and gym as well as indoor and outdoor pitches. The university — with Cambridge — is an MCC University Centre for Cricketing Excellence. The boat club has six teams and training sculls housed at Emmanuel College boathouse.
The university has a bursary system designed with one eye on its high dropout rate, which sees about one in four fail to complete their courses. Once students progress to their second semester in year one and complete an attendance task, £500 is credited to a university Aspire Card, a sort of debit card that can be used in university bookshops for learning materials (but sadly not beer).
STUDENT VIEW
Matthew East, students’ union president:
First impressions I was able to meet people from many different areas
and years of study from a very early point.
Worst feature There would be more scope to work with people from
different areas if we weren’t split across four campuses.
Facilities There are some exciting investments going on. The Cambridge
campus is having course facilities redeveloped and a postgraduate centre is
being built at Chelmsford.
Deal clincher The Cambridge campus offers a beautiful and unique place
to study and the university has a wide variety of joint honours options
across all four campuses.
