Its 125th anniversary isn’t the only reason for celebration at Bangor this year. Alumnus and film director Danny Boyle, who graduated in 1978, became the university’s first Oscar winner in February with Slumdog Millionaire.
The university marked the 125-year milestone by granting its first honorary degrees, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Sir David Attenborough among the beneficiaries.
Bangor became independent from the University of Wales in 2007, and students beginning this month are the first to enrol on Bangor University degrees. The seaside university, which neighbours Snowdonia National Park, has extended the range of subjects on offer to undergraduates. Medical science, music technology and new media are among the recent additions.
A £36m project will replace the Theatr Gwynned and students’ union buildings with the Da Vinci Centre for innovation in science and the arts.
Bangor is joining forces with Aberystwyth, Cardiff and Swansea universities in the Climate Change Consortium of Wales project. Another collaboration comes in the form of the Strategic Health Alliance for Research and Education, which sees Bangor working with Cardiff University.
Six new halls of residence opened last year, providing an additional 687 en-suite rooms. First-year students are guaranteed accommodation.
Last year about half of new students received a means-tested bursary, ranging from £500 a year for household incomes between £18,370 and £39,300 to £1,000 a year for incomes below £18,370. Entrance scholarships, ranging from £500 to £3,000, reward those who excel in the scholarship exam and 17 students starting this month have been awarded £3,000 each. There are a further 10 excellence scholarships worth up to £5,000 each for those with an outstanding academic record.
STUDENT VIEW
John Jackson, students’ union president:
First impressions The university is situated between Snowdonia and
Anglesey, with great scenery.
Worst feature Having to go out of the city to get to the cinema — but
it’s only 20 minutes on the train.
Facilities The local environment means that non-traditional sports such
as mountaineering and water sports are more accessible than elsewhere in the
UK.
Deal clincher My linguistics course and the beautiful scenery attracted
me. The city is a manageable size and the cafe on the pier serves legendary
scones.
