York St John University dates back to 1841, when York Diocesan Training School for teacher training opened with a single student on the register. Today, three years after gaining university status, more than 5,000 students are benefiting from York St John’s courses, which span education and theology, business and communication, health and life sciences and arts.
The university, which faces York Minster, has invested £70m in recent years. Last autumn a £10m accommodation complex opened. The development provides self-catering housing for more than 270 students, and another block on the same site, due to open next September, will add rooms for another 230.
De Grey Court, York St John’s £15m landmark building, won an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects this year. The building houses resources for health and life sciences subjects and a graduate school, as well as offices. A £300,000 revamp of the design and technology centre has created editing and speech laboratory facilities, as well as adding another music technology suite.
Sports facilities haven’t been overlooked — the Hull Road site, where the university’s outdoor playing fields are situated, has a new pavilion and changing rooms. The Foss building, on the main campus, has a sports hall used for badminton, netball, volleyball, basketball, five-a-side football and cricket nets. It also has a climbing wall and fitness suite.
The university is focusing on strengthening its relationships with businesses. A range of new business courses are being launched next year — a result of the faculty of business and communication becoming part of York St John’s business school.
The existing portfolio is being extended to include business management and human resources management and international business management in 2010.
About a third of students are eligible for a means-tested bursary. Those who have a family income below £18,360 receive £1,610, which reduces on a sliding scale to £540 for students from homes with an income between £20,971 and £25,000.
STUDENT VIEW
Jason Wallis, students’ union president:
First impressions There’s a sense that you’re part of something and you
won’t get lost in the crowd.
Worst feature Our small size is a double-edged sword: we get lots of
one-on-one time with tutors but we don’t have the facilities of a larger
university.
Facilities Our new De Grey Court building is a great mix of old and
new.
Deal clincher You feel that your time here will make a difference and
that what you achieve will not go unnoticed.
