Founded in 1822, Lampeter integrates the traditions of an old university with the facilities of a modern one. In addition to being a traditional liberal arts university, it offers contemporary academic disciplines including media studies, business management and information technology.
Even so, this may be the institution’s last year in its present form as the University of Lampeter, as it is planning a merger with Trinity University College. The amalgamation will result in the University of Wales Trinity St David, which aims to be a powerhouse of higher education in west Wales and hopes to welcome its first students in September 2010. The new name revives Lampeter’s original title, St David’s College, which it took when it was founded in 1822.
Lampeter was ranked second in Wales (behind the college it is merging with), and 39= in the UK, for student satisfaction in this year’s national student survey. It scored 77% in a Sunday Times analysis of the outcomes, up 2% on last year. Lampeter has fallen dramatically in our overall rankings, however — largely as a result of a statistical quirk in calculating its dropout rate. Official figures include large numbers of students who have dropped out on a course validated by Lampeter but taught by a different institution in London, far from the bucolic charms of west Wales.
The flexible degree structure allows students to design a course that suits their own interests. The surrounding landscape is also a selling point. Set at the base of the Cambrian Mountains and a few miles from the sea, Lampeter is a picturesque as well as safe environment to live and study in.
Facilities include one of the oldest libraries in Wales and one of the largest e-book collections in Wales.
STUDENT VIEW
Jimmy Page, students’ union president:
First impressions Small with a peaceful, personable atmosphere.
Worst feature Sometimes it can be a little too quiet and we have to
make our own fun.
Facilities Founded in the 1820s, so there is a very traditional feel to
it.
Deal clincher You won’t come to just get a degree, it offers you so
much more.
