A new campus in the heart of Newport city centre is to open in 2010-11, housing the university’s business school and the lion’s share of its school of art, media and design. It comes thanks to £35m of investment and will certainly add vigour both to the university and the city. The urban site will provide a balance to the leafy Caerleon campus in a pretty village on the outskirts of Newport, while the old city-based site, Allt-yr-yn, will close.
Separately, a collaboration with the University of Glamorgan and the further education sector will create the Heads of the Valleys Institute, named after the area spanning Ebbw Vale and Merthyr Tydfil, and it aims to combat skills shortages in the region. Newport has a vocational emphasis and new this year is business leadership/enterprise development; primary education through the medium of Welsh; sports coaching and development; and youth and community studies and youth justice.
Student satisfaction is high, with Newport ranking 58 in the UK in the latest national student survey, well ahead of nearby Cardiff. The new research assessments were a triumph for the art and design school, with 70% of the work submitted classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. Few staff from other departments were entered, however.
As the first university to house a biodiesel plant on campus, Newport is continuing to put green issues at the forefront of what it does. The new city campus is on track to be awarded the top category (Breeam Excellence) in environmental building, recycling facilities are in all halls of residence, and Newport has graduated from the Carbon Trust management programme.
There is a strong record of attracting students from backgrounds without a long history in higher education, and 99% come from state schools. There is lot of financial support, including elite sports scholarships of up to £1,000.
