The university, which has just celebrated its second birthday, draws on
the experience and reputation of St Martin’s College, Cumbria Institute of
the Arts and the Cumbrian campuses of the University of Central Lancashire,
which merged in 2007.
Apart from the main Carlisle campus, Cumbria has sites in Newton Rigg, Penrith, Ambleside, Lancaster, and Lillyhall (with a professional development centre for teacher training in east London).
Cumbria is keen to innovate beyond its established courses, providing students with the skills and qualifications needed to develop west Cumbria into Britain’s Energy Coast. From this month a foundation degree in engineering is being taught at Energus, a futuristic building on the new campus at Lillyhall, near Workington. This is shared with further education colleges and other partners, part of a £2 billion project to regenerate the area.
The university hopes Britain’s Energy Coast campus will develop the area’s nuclear expertise (the Sellafield reprocessing site is nearby) into a focus on renewable energy production, including wind, tidal and biomass. There are plans to extend the courses, with the hope of making renewable energy a specialism at Cumbria.
The bursary scheme is one of the most generous. All students are eligible, with a top payment of £1,290 and more than half getting over £1,000 each year.
