The 30,000 students at UWE are helping to shape the extension of the main
Frenchay campus. The university, which has four locations in and around
Bristol, has bought 70 acres of land next to the existing 80-acre site, and
wants feedback on turning this into a 21st-century campus to meet
educational, social and residential needs.
One student worked with the design team for the first stage of the new development, a three-storey addition to a building which houses the faculty for environment and technology, due to be ready in September 2010.
It is the latest in a list of recent investments. A crime scene house and forensic laboratory are among the new facilities on the Bower Ashton campus, after the completion of the first stage of a 10-year £12m redevelopment plan.
An £80m student village on the Frenchay campus means nearly 2,000 students live in easy reach of the library, lecture theatres and sports hall. Accommodation costs range from £84 to £131 a week. The more expensive rooms are in the new student village, and the residential fees include the use of sports centre facilities.
The university has work experience links with a number of high-profile companies, including BBC, Cadbury, IBM, Marks & Spencer, Rolls-Royce and Virgin. Placements allow students to earn money while gaining experience.
The existing list of more than 600 courses is being extended this year to include geography and tourism, animal management, and computing and applied mathematics. From next September, undergraduates will be able to study for foundation degrees in sports performance (rugby/ football), uniformed services, and garden history and heritage horticulture. Students from families with incomes less than £25,000 qualify for a £1,000 bursary.
STUDENT VIEW
Katy Phillips, student representative council president:
First impressions A welcoming environment where everything is done to
make you feel at home.
Worst feature The transport system in Bristol is horrendous.
Facilities Amazing student village and a fantastic sports centre.
Deal clincher Each campus has its own vibrant atmosphere, so it’s worth
checking out your neighbours.
