The University of East London received its charter in 1992 and has been transformed in the past 17 years by a series of developments, topped by the striking Docklands campus at the Royal Albert Dock. And the works are ongoing; a £10m sports and leisure centre is due to open in 2011. The university’s second outpost in Stratford is on the doorstep of the 2012 Olympic Games site and it is hoped that geographic proximity will lead to job opportunities for students. The Cass School of Education opened there this year. A conference and computing centre has also been built and there is a landscaped green.
Many undergraduate programmes can be started in either February or September and it is possible to take some courses via an “online campus”. While one in five students still drop out, the attrition rate is at least below that expected by the funding council, which takes account of UEL’s social and academic mix, both among the most diverse in Britain.
The accent is on vocational education and the Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship, opened last March, is in keeping with this. Part-funded by philanthropist Jack Petchey, it combines enterprise development with teaching, research and community outreach work and is located within UEL’s Royal Docks business school.
