Uwic courses are developed in conjunction with industry, resulting in lower than average graduate unemployment. The institute is gaining a growing reputation for research and enterprise, with postgraduates making up 23% of its population, and it has committed £10m over the next five years to support bursaries and to broaden access.
At its Llandaff site work has just commenced on the £20m Cardiff School of Management building, and a £4.3m Food Industry Centre has been launched at its School of Health Sciences. Biomedical science research at the centre will seek to understand diseases, focusing on illnesses of importance to Wales, such as diabetes.
The university is one of the leading sports centres in the UK. It houses the Cardiff/Glamorgan Centre of Cricketing Excellence, and gives elite athletes scholarships of up to £1,000 each year for the duration of their course, as well as access to specialist coaches, and other services, including sports psychologists. Facilities are excellent.
STUDENT VIEW
Claire-Louise Rafferty, students’ union president:
First impressions: Each campus has its unique atmosphere.
Worst feature: It has to be Taffy’s, the old Cyncoed student bar.
Facilities: The campus centre will have a lounge, housing hub and
offices for the student and athletics unions.
Deal clincher: Students are listened to, and the experience just gets
better and better.
