Exeter makes one of the best offers to students in the UK and its students know it, ranking the university ninth overall (sixth among mainstream multi-faculty institutions) in the UK in the annual national student survey.
Already excellent facilities are being boosted by £270m of investment in the next three years, rising to £450m by 2020. This includes £130m on new student residences on what is widely acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful campuses in Britain, occupying a hillside site a 15-minute walk from the city centre.
There is a new £25m business school and £18m is being invested in biosciences. With its own medical school since 2003, Exeter is spending a further £80m in medicine, science and engineering over the next three years. All this translates into applications rising by 17% this year: Exeter is a university on the up.
Heavy investment in staffing — with 182 new appointments in the past two years — has also paid dividends. Research income was up 26% to £48m in 2007-8 and the research assessment exercise published last December found evidence of world-leading work in all 31 subjects entered. In half of the subjects, Exeter ranked among the top 10 institutions nationally.
Exeter attracts some of the best qualified school-leavers, who continue their academic progress to place the university in the top 10 nationally for the proportion of firsts and 2:1s awarded. Almost four in five students achieve this benchmark.
The most gifted (gaining at least AAA at A-level) can apply for one of 10 vice-chancellor’s excellence scholarships awarded annually worth £5,000 a year. To qualify, students must also demonstrate exceptional personal achievement.
STUDENT VIEW
Richard Stearn, students’ guild president:
First impressions There’s something for everyone here.
Worst feature There’s a lot of building work which will be going on
next year.
Facilities Work on a library refit and more learning space starts soon.
Deal clincher Exeter is a small city, we’re within striking distance of
the beach. People feel at home here.
