Tradition and innovation go hand in hand at the University of Glasgow. Founded in 1451, it boasts more listed buildings than any other UK university, and is among the oldest.
Some 558 years after it welcomed its first students, continuing investment to the tune of at least £65m a year ensures the institution, which was our Scottish University of the Year in 2007 and is runner-up this year, remains top dog when it comes to facilities. The Small Animal hospital and Large Animal Holding Building opened this summer, with a focus on a holistic approach to treating animals. They are part of the veterinary school based on Garscube estate, three miles from the main city campus. A third, in Dumfries, is set in 85 acres of parkland and gardens.
As a member of the Russell Group, Glasgow’s research profile is among the best in the UK and success in the research assessment exercise has boosted it in our league table.
Ranking 14th in the UK in the national student survey has helped, too, putting Glasgow as close to the top of the rankings for student satisfaction as Edinburgh is to the bottom. Every year 50 high-achieving new entrants who may face hardship are granted a talent scholarship of £1,000 for each year of study.
With the city hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, you’d expect Glasgow to be home to some excellent sports amenities, and it doesn’t disappoint. The university ranked among the top quarter of UK institutions in the most recent British Universities & Colleges Sport championships, and its own facilities include a heated pool, fitness studio, free weights areas, squash courts, games hall, all-weather pitches, tennis courts and a cricket oval.
STUDENT VIEW
Chris Jubb, students’ union president:
First impressions The west end of Glasgow will amaze you, it’s like
something out of Harry Potter.
Worst feature May and June are the best months for sunshine, but we are
stuck in the library studying for exams.
Facilities Glasgow offers everything that you would want to do.
Deal clincher It’s the people of Glasgow, they are warm and welcoming.
