The University of Greenwich remains true to its founding principles as Britain’s second polytechnic and offers a wide range of work-related courses. It spans three campuses, two in southeast London and one in Kent. The Greenwich site inhabits what must rank as some of the most exquisite university grounds in the country. Centring on three buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the campus is on a world heritage site overlooking the Thames.
The school of architecture and construction, currently housed at the Avery Hill campus in nearby Eltham, is set to have new quarters in Greenwich town centre. At Avery Hill, meanwhile, new catering and fitness facilities have been created following a multi-million-pound project. At the Kent outpost in Medway a hall of residence opened in 2008, adding rooms for 144 students.
The university actively seeks out applications from students who would not traditionally apply due to financial hardship or lack of family history in higher education. There are outreach schemes and 200 “ambassadors” — current students — work with young people in a variety of contexts.
While exact scholarship and bursary figures for 2010 entry have not been finalised, provision is likely to be similar to last year. All students who qualify for the full government maintenance grant are eligible for a fixed-level bursary, which for 2009 entry was £525. Scholarships are not means-tested but are worth the same amount as the bursaries to students entering with a Ucas score of 300 points or higher, equivalent to BBB at A-level. Numbers are unlimited.
