Low-participation areas 17% Sheffield Hallam is one of the UK’s largest providers of sandwich courses, four-year degrees which include a paid work placement. Not only does this ease financial strain, it also gives its graduates a head start in the jobs market — just 8% are still out of work six months after leaving, a little below the UK university average.
With more than 28,000 students, this is one of Britain’s biggest universities and one of the largest trainers of teachers, midwives, nurses and radiotherapists in the country. Places are in demand — this year saw a 14% increase in applications.
The past decade has seen £100m invested in facilities. Last year the Furnival building on the City campus opened as a new home for the faculty of arts, computing, engineering and sciences, and the Arundel building opened as the new base for education courses. The City campus houses the £5m students’ union building.
Two bursary schemes support those from low-income households, with an estimated 55% of admissions receiving bursaries last year. The £700 grant bursary is for students who receive the maximum state grant. The £300 partnership bursary, which isn’t means-tested, goes to those who have joined from a partner school or college.
