Anderson’s Institution was founded in 1796, with the aim of being “a place of useful learning”. More than 200 years later, this raison d’être remains central to the institution, which is now known as the University of Strathclyde.
Courses are developed in consultation with employers, giving students the skills they need in the workplace. An MSc in power plant engineering, which is Scotland’s first part-time programme for the power generation industry, was developed after Scottish Enterprise and the Industrial and Power Association approached the university. After consultation with 20 international companies, the course was launched.
Such close collaboration with businesses helps Strathclyde’s graduates find work — the university boasts a below-average figure of 6.9% of graduates unemployed six months after leaving, and 80% are in graduate-level jobs, ranking Strathclyde 16th in the UK. There is plenty of support, via the Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network, for those who want to establish their own company. In the past 3Å years, 47 start-ups have been founded this way.
The John Anderson campus, in the heart of Glasgow, houses the university’s student village. Nearly 2,000 rooms are available for those who want to live in, with the library, students’ union, sports facilities and city centre on the doorstep. A free shuttle bus connects the site to the Jordanhill teacher training campus in the west end area of Glasgow.
With the city preparing to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in sport. As well as the university’s playing fields, the John Anderson campus has the centre for sport and recreation, with facilities for martial arts, squash, weight training, most indoor sports and fitness classes.
