The University of Salford is in the thick of the town’s flagship regeneration project MediaCityUK. The development at Salford Quays will be the new home of five BBC departments from 2011, and the university has leased 103,000 sq ft of building in which to house facilities, garnering £8m of funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England into the bargain.
At the main Peel Park campus, plans are afoot for a £47m home for the school of media, music and performance, which should further help students involved in making programmes for the Manchester television station, Channel M, which broadcasts their work to homes all over the city and across Europe.
Halls of residence are undergoing a facelift, too, and all full-time first-years are guaranteed a room in university accommodation if they want one.
Salford comfortably beats all its widening participation benchmarks, recruiting heavily from the lower social classes and areas with low participation rates in higher education. With a high proportion of mature students on roll, less than half the intake hold A-levels as their main passport for entry. Student satisfaction rates, while better than near-neighbour Manchester, could be higher; our analysis of the national student survey ranks Salford 103.
A flat-rate bursary of £320 is given to all students who qualify for the full government maintenance grant. In September 2008 this accounted for 94% of the undergraduate intake. And there are academic scholarships worth £1,000 a year for all students who gain AAB at A-level or equivalent.
