A 24% rise in applications this year, one of the largest increases of any university, should ensure that the numbers admitted through clearing (18% last year) are considerably down. It remains a mystery why Hull has just three applications per place when those who study here have such strong feelings for it. High levels of student satisfaction, measured in the annual national student survey (where Hull secured another top 20 ranking this year), are backed up by a reputation for friendliness.
The bursary scheme is generous with £1,000 a year paid to students from homes where the income is less than £25,000, dropping to £500 for incomes as high as £40,000. There are also £1,500 a year scholarships for those with outstanding A-level results.
Hull is in the top 25 universities for low graduate unemployment and more than 70% find graduate-level jobs. The opening last December of an enterprise centre to assist those with start-up business ideas and the completion of a student support centre offering advice on careers, finance and welfare should further strengthen Hull’s hand in employment terms.
English, history, politics, psychology, chemistry and drama are particular fortes. Students of the latter are benefiting from the new Anthony Minghella drama studio, named in memory of the late stage and film director who was a Hull graduate.
STUDENT VIEW
Jamie Scudamore, students’ union president:
First impressions Hull — the university and the city — is a friendly,
welcoming place.
Worst feature It’s definitely got to be the weather!
Facilities The business school was refurbished and combines listed
buildings with modern facilities.
Deal clincher It has to be the student union. It’s active and vibrant
and a great place to meet people.
