Kent is reporting a 19% rise in applications this year, with candidates keen to embark on courses designed to equip them with the skills needed for work, as well as to broaden their horizons.
For example, a law degree, which includes spending a year in China, is available from this month, as well as anthropology with a year in Japan, and international business with a year in Europe. About 400 students a year take part in foreign exchanges with more than 100 partner institutions in Europe through the Erasmus programme, and the university also has a postgraduate campus in Brussels.
Closer to home, among woods, fields and parkland is the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus, half an hour’s walk from the city centre. The self-contained site provides student accommodation as well as a library, nightclub and computer rooms.
Work placements are encouraged, with students getting experience with companies including IBM, Morgan Stanley, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline.
Undergraduates starting this term will be among the first to use a £2.5m sports pavilion, which opened in July.
Students from families earning up to £40,000 qualify for a bursary, which range from £1,000 for household incomes of less than £25,000 to £250 for an income which falls between £34,000 and £40,000. There are 20 scholarships up for grabs, worth £1,000 for each year of study. One award is given by each of the 20 academic schools to a student who has achieved a minimum of 320 Ucas points (ABB at A-level or equivalent) and submitted an essay.
