Leeds has continued its steady ascent of our league table — buoyed by the outcome of the research assessments (RAE) published at the end of last year. A Sunday Times analysis of the new ratings ranks Leeds 15= based on the average score achieved by all the research material submitted for assessment. Other analyses of the RAE have ranked Leeds even higher on account of the sheer number of academics (1,270) entered. English and social work and policy had the greatest proportion of work considered to be world-leading (35%), followed by electrical and electronic engineering (30%). With £49.2m of central research funds allocated last March off the back of the 2008 RAE results, just eight universities earned more.
One of the elite Russell Group of research-led universities, success in research impacts heavily on teaching, where Leeds also enjoys a good record. Under the now defunct system of formal assessments, Leeds saw 27 subjects rated excellent for teaching quality. Students’ own ratings of teaching quality, assessment and feedback on their work and the quality of learning resources earn the university a ranking just outside the top 50 in the UK. The outcomes of the annual national student survey (NSS) are closely monitored here, which is not surprising given that vice-chancellor Michael Arthur is a former chairman of the steering group that oversees the survey’s publication.
Prior to the 2004 merger of the University of Manchester and the neighbouring University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Leeds was the most popular university in the country. Five years on, it is coming close to regaining that position, trailing Manchester by less than 4,000 students this year. With more than 50,000 applications annually, there are about seven students chasing every place.
Leeds is aiming for a place among the top 50 universities in the world by 2015 and is well on the way at No 104, according to the latest world rankings.
