Leicester is determined to make university education an achievable aim for young people, regardless of their background. It also holds its own in our elite top 20 universities for the third year running, ranking 20= this year, partly off the back of outstanding scores for student satisfaction.
The annual national student survey rates universities for their teaching quality, usefulness of student assessment and feedback and the quality of learning resources (as well as overall satisfaction). This year no multi-faculty university achieved better results than Leicester, with media studies and geography both recording scores in excess of 90%, and the university’s overall score coming close to 84%. Word is getting round — the university recorded a 17% increase in applications this year.
Testament to Leicester’s community initiatives and work with local schools and colleges through the Aimhigher programme, more than a quarter of the undergraduate intake is from lower socioeconomic groups, the biggest proportion of any top 20 university.
A few minutes’ walk from the city centre, the campus is benefiting from a £1 billion investment programme. The Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian have appeared recently at the award-winning students’ union.
All first-years are guaranteed a place in university-owned accommodation. Leicester has a wide range of sports facilities and more than 30 clubs, from snowboarding to riding.
