They’re not short on style at King’s College. To mark the first awarding of King’s College degrees last year, it commissioned Dame Vivienne Westwood to design 20 new gowns and hoods for the various schools of study and different levels of degrees. Each incorporates a KCL lion button on the right shoulder, symbolising the college’s degree-awarding powers.
King’s remains within the University of London federation, however, giving its students access to a wide range of accommodation, sports and social facilities. It is at the end of a £550m redevelopment programme, with the Strand campus seeing most of the recent spend, which has included creating a 90-metre hall of fame, packed with images of famous alumni.
Now ranked 22nd in the Times Higher Education’s world university rankings and on the fringes of our elite top 10, King’s has a formidable academic reputation that this year saw more than £82.5m awarded in central research funds to the college off the back of last year’s research assessment exercise (RAE). Just four institutions got more research cash. About 60% of submissions were rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
The King’s myBursary scheme gives £1,350 to any student from a home with a household income below £28,530. There are also up to 40 scholarships.
