The fact that the Queen pointedly asked academics at the LSE why nobody had seen the credit crunch coming when opening its new eight-storey teaching building in Lincoln’s Inn Fields last November has nothing to do with its fall in this year’s Sunday Times league table. Professor Luis Garicano, director of research at the LSE, said: “She was asking me if these things were so large, how come everyone missed it.” Well, the LSE was at least in good company.
Regardless of this oversight, in its specialist field of economics, politics and the wider social sciences, the LSE is second to none. More students apply through Ucas for a place here than anywhere else, with about 13 candidates chasing every opening.
Research and postgraduate study is a vital part of the school. The latest research assessment exercise confirmed the LSE’s pre-eminence in its specialist area.
Low student satisfaction scores are hard to understand. LSE students ranked it 106= out of 123 institutions overall this year on a series of questions to do with teaching quality, learning resources, assessment and feedback, and overall satisfaction.
Bursary provision benefits just under 40% of students, and awards include four scholarships endowed by easyJet boss and LSE graduate Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, each worth almost £5,500 a year.
