Newcastle’s popularity with undergraduates is not hard to fathom. It recruits from across the UK (with about one in 10 also coming from overseas) and is popular with students from state and independent schools, pupils from the latter making up just under one-third of UK recruits, while the university also enjoys an enviable social mix, with about one in five drawn from working-class backgrounds.
The university is one of the finest places in Britain to study medicine. It won a full hand of perfect teaching assessments covering anatomy and physiology, dentistry, medicine, pharmacology and pharmacy, molecular biosciences, organismal biosciences and speech and language sciences.
As part of a £200m investment, there is a new medical sciences building which will be a hub for world-leading research. Newcastle is one of just two centres in the UK licensed to conduct stem cell research with hybrid embryos, looking into cures for diseases such as Parkinson’s and diabetes.
While medicine can claim to be the jewel in the academic crown at Newcastle, the university offers strength in depth with 20 subjects gaining excellent ratings in the cycle of teaching assessments concluded earlier in the decade. Overall student satisfaction is up this year to 78%, ranking 24= nationally and now among the best, outstripping many city-based universities where outside factors — including quality of private accommodation, commuting and fear of crime — have depressed scores in the national student survey. The city was recently voted best town for students in an accommodationforstudents.com survey, which drew on the views of 36,000 students nationally.
Bursary provision is generous and £1,340 is offered to students from families where the income is less than £25,000, topped up to £1,840 for those gaining AAA at A-level (or to £1,540 with two A-level A grades).
